Contribute. Learn. Connect.
How participation works: tasks, costs, certificates and authorship

From application to a scientific contribution.

Join an existing microscopIA project as a research-team participant. Applying starts selection; work begins after acceptance, onboarding and agreement on your role.

  1. Your work

The usual contribution is data extraction and verification, with project-specific training and supervision. Mapping teams also locate sources, build provider databases and geolocate care sites; AI projects may assign image annotation. The project brief takes precedence when it specifies different tasks.

  2. Our investment

microscopIA covers all publication and execution costs of approved Join a Project work, including engineers, epidemiologists and data scientists. Participants are not asked to fund these project costs. Membership fees, where applicable, are separate.

  3. Your recognition

Members and external participants receive project certificates for verified contributions and completed milestones. Substantial scientific contributions and sustained good performance create a pathway to authorship, subject to all authorship criteria.

Certificates, authorship and dissemination — how they work

Certificates document work, not journal acceptance

A project certificate records the verified role, contributions and completed work; it can support your CV before journal publication. It is distinct from membership certificates, reference letters and institutional academic credit, which have their own requirements.

An equitable pathway to authorship

Data acquisition alone is not sufficient. Contributors who make substantial qualifying contributions are given the opportunity to help draft or critically review the manuscript, approve the final version and accept accountability. All who meet the applicable authorship criteria should receive credit. Roles and author order are reviewed transparently using contribution records; membership and payment do not purchase authorship.

Preprints while peer review proceeds

When scientifically and ethically appropriate, the team may post a preprint before or during journal review, subject to author approval, permissions and journal policy. A preprint is preliminary and not peer reviewed; cite its actual status. Timing and journal acceptance are not guaranteed.

Presenting the team’s work

The team plans for one member to present a poster or oral contribution at a national or international congress when the findings and event are suitable. Presenter selection considers contribution, readiness and availability. Submission and acceptance depend on the congress; registration and travel funding must be confirmed separately in writing.

ICMJE · An equitable pathway to authorship ↗

This pathway covers joining an existing project. Clinician/investigator calls for proposing a case report or original study have separate input requirements, membership/nonmember rates and approved agreements. Applicants do not send patient-identifiable records or confidential datasets through initial applications.

Publication support, with a clear route

The ability to pay should not be what determines whether valuable scientific work can reach publication. We assess support within the programme’s conditions.

Transparent authorship

Authors, contributions, member percentage, microscopIA and external affiliations.

Support requirements and conditions

For this member-initiated review route, at least 50% of all genuine authors must be microscopIA Network members with active paid membership. Exactly 50% qualifies for assessment (5 of 10); 3 of 5 is 60%. Memberships are verified during assessment and before funding authorization.

Support depends on high-quality execution and scientific assessment of your question, methods and work completed. Manuscript support and publication-cost support are separate decisions, with scope and covered costs confirmed in writing before expenses are incurred.

Report microscopIA Network members with active paid membership as a percentage of all genuine authors: active members ÷ total authors × 100. The 50% requirement uses the exact counts, not a rounded percentage.

List every author, scientific contributions and all actual affiliations: microscopIA department or group where applicable, plus external institutions, departments, cities and countries. Membership and institutional affiliation are verified separately.

For an approved collaboration, a qualifying microscopIA researcher retains the corresponding-author role, with real scientific contributions, accountability, all-author agreement and compliance with journal rules.

microscopIA assesses applicable open-access agreements through the corresponding author’s genuine, verifiable affiliations. The publisher and participating institution must confirm eligibility and coverage; no agreement or fee waiver is guaranteed.

Prepare your review question and type, protocol or registration if available, methods, evidence of progress, author list and contributions, total authors and active-member count. Indicate the support needed and any proposed journal or fee estimate; these may be unknown.

Authorship follows actual scientific contributions. Do not add authors to meet the threshold. A request does not guarantee support, journal acceptance or publication.

Approved work within microscopIA

For approved projects developed within microscopIA, the organization may cover the agreed publication costs under the applicable programme conditions. Existing written commitments to cover approved charges remain in force.

Clinicians & Investigators · collaborative reviews

As an experienced Clinicians & Investigators member, propose a systematic review or meta-analysis with the microscopIA network and request open-access publication-cost support when MORE THAN 30% of the qualifying authors have a verified active microscopIA affiliation.

The threshold allows a support request; it does not automatically grant funding. Scientific review and written approval must confirm the journal, covered amount, exclusions and payment procedure before costs are incurred. Membership alone does not establish affiliation or authorship. Affiliations must be genuine and authorship follows actual contributions. Journal acceptance is independent.

Publication-cost support is distinct from membership subscriptions, project fees and accelerated preparation. Clinical-call fees remain applicable unless a written agreement expressly changes them.

A RECOGNIZED RESEARCH GROUP

Your next step into real-world research.

The microscopIA research group was recognized by Colombia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MinCiencias) through Call 894 of 2021. Join a project within an environment that connects scientific supervision, research infrastructure and an international network.

About Call 894 (2021) ↗

PARTICIPATE. CONTRIBUTE. DEVELOP.

Research experience you can build on.

Choose a question that matters to you and turn meaningful work into a documented academic contribution. The opportunities below depend on your participation route and the project’s approved scope.

01

Build a publication record

Contribute to a real study: develop research questions, analyze evidence, prepare a manuscript and respond to scientific review. Authorship reflects documented contributions and the applicable authorship criteria.

02

Take your work to a scientific congress

Develop an abstract from eligible project findings and pursue a poster or oral presentation with the team. Submission, presenter selection, event fees and travel are agreed for each project; acceptance is decided by the congress.

03

Document what you contribute

Build your curriculum vitae with verified roles, contributions and completed work. Project certificates recognize verified work for members and external participants. Separate institutional membership certificates and professional reference letters are available to eligible members after four completed, uninterrupted months of active membership. References depend on documented performance and the authorized referee’s decision.

04

Grow within an international network

Collaborate with students, clinicians, engineers and investigators. Members can apply to research groups, build a verified researcher profile and access their plan’s learning, simulation and well-being benefits. Group admission and project approval follow their own criteria.

Members: a pathway beyond one project

microscopIA ensures a suitable supervised project allocation for eligible active members; your preferred project is not guaranteed. Research Pathway allows up to two simultaneous projects. Explore Research Leadership for senior research-development benefits.

External applicants: a project-specific route

Apply where external participation is offered. Selection depends on available places and project requirements. External participants receive certificates for their verified project work; this route does not include Network membership or reference letters. Qualifying scientific contributions remain eligible for authorship.

Manuscript and congress acceptance are independent editorial decisions. Membership does not purchase authorship or a favorable reference. Institutional member-certificate eligibility requires uninterrupted membership without payment delays, verification of contributions and the applicable terms. Read membership terms.
