Global Retinopathy of Prematurity Observatory

Connect prevention evidence with the specialists and referral pathways that protect infants’ sight.

The Observatory studies the full pathway to preventable blindness from retinopathy of prematurity (ROP): real-world evidence on ketorolac and nepafenac prophylaxis in early-stage disease; geographic access to clinicians trained to screen, treat or provide both services; health economics; and investigational AI designed to flag suspected cases for timely specialist review. These observational findings do not establish that prophylaxis prevents progression, and the AI is not a diagnostic tool. Each project follows its own protocol, review and authorization pathway.

THE QUESTION · THE USE · THE STATUS

What would improve the pathway to protecting infant vision?

What the work can inform

Evaluate real-world prophylaxis, access to ophthalmologists trained in screening, treatment or both, economic value, and investigational AI and devices.

What exists and what comes next

Clinical, economic and workforce studies have separate public records. Observational findings and development benchmarks do not establish treatment efficacy or clinical device readiness.

Which route fits my interest?

Each project must define accountable investigators, data sources and date, methods, limitations, applicable approvals and contributions. Funding and membership do not determine findings. Scientific governance →

SCOPE · INPUTS · USE

What we could develop with your team.

These pathways guide a scientific conversation. Outputs, resources, permissions and timing are agreed per project; they are not a contractual offer or results already delivered.

Screening and treatment access

Inputs we would need
Verified specialists and care sites, distinguishing screening, treatment or both.
A possible agreed output
A validated service registry and population-weighted access estimates.
What it could inform
Locate potential referral gaps without implying appointment availability or treatment quality.

Clinical outcomes and economic value

Inputs we would need
Authorized cohorts, comparators, relevant outcomes, costs and study-design limitations.
A possible agreed output
A prespecified analysis with uncertainty and an explicit economic perspective.
What it could inform
Compare options in context; observational associations do not establish treatment efficacy.

Retinal imaging, AI and devices

Inputs we would need
Intended use, development stage, permitted images, annotation criteria and clinical oversight.
A possible agreed output
A development or evaluation plan with performance and safety questions.
What it could inform
Determine the next validation step. A research benchmark is not clinical authorization.

AI-assisted retinopathy-of-prematurity screening pathway

An investigational AI pathway supports neonatologists, neonatal nurses, general practitioners and other primary-care staff in flagging suspected ROP and referring infants promptly to pediatric ophthalmologists, retina/vitreous specialists or other clinicians trained in ROP. The AI does not diagnose ROP; specialist assessment and routine surveillance remain essential.

INVESTIGATIONAL AI · EXPANDING CAPACITY

Flag suspected cases. Refer in time.

We are developing a support tool for neonatologists, neonatal nurses, general practitioners and other primary-care staff. Its purpose is to flag images potentially compatible with ROP and facilitate timely specialist assessment.

  1. Trained staff acquire images under an authorized protocol and check image quality.
  2. AI flags a possible suspicion or an image needing review; it does not diagnose ROP.
  3. The clinical pathway supports referral to pediatric ophthalmology, retina/vitreous specialists or other clinicians trained in ROP.
  4. The responsible clinician establishes diagnosis, decides care and maintains indicated surveillance. An unflagged result does not exclude ROP or cancel follow-up.

Development project: performance, external validation, safety and regulatory requirements must be assessed before clinical use. No unverified sensitivity, specificity or authorization is claimed.

ONE NETWORK · SHARED SCIENTIFIC CAPACITY

Your expertise. A team to move it forward.

Observatory participation connects clinical and methodological expertise with research execution, collaboration and health-system questions. The membership pathway is Clinicians & Investigators, with the same benefits and conditions across observatories.

There is no additional Observatory subscription. Membership supports shared staff, infrastructure, approved publication support and community programs. Scientific admission and individual project approval remain separate decisions.

01

Develop approved research

Propose reviews, original studies, case reports or innovation projects. Staffing, publication support, timelines and costs are agreed within the membership terms and a project-specific plan.

02

Use a verified affiliation

An approved, documented Observatory role may support the corresponding microscopIA affiliation for eligible work. Membership alone does not authorize institutional representation, endorsement or unrestricted use of the name.

03

Build a research group

Propose a hosted group with a research program, leader CV and at least three projects. Scientific fit, supervision, resources and a recruitment plan must be approved before launch.

Explore hosted groups →

From proposal to participation

  1. Share your scientific profile

Provide your CV, expertise, availability, conflicts of interest and a proposed contribution. Keep patient information out of the application.

  2. Agree the scope

microscopIA reviews scientific fit and confirms responsibilities, project supervision and required permissions. We aim to communicate a decision or request for information within 10 calendar days.

  3. Start approved work

Execution begins after written scientific approval, an agreed resource allocation and any required ethics, data or institutional authorization.

Authorship follows substantive contributions, manuscript review, final approval and accountability. Payment does not secure authorship, first-author position, editorial acceptance, data access or a role in a particular project.

FOR CLINICIANS & SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATORS

Bring your expertise. Shape the next question.

Connect neonatal and ophthalmic expertise with screening pathways, workforce mapping and outcomes research.

WORK WITH THE PROGRAM

Choose how to take part.

Explore collaboration, project participation and responsible funding through the program’s existing pathways.

PHILANTHROPY & PARTNERSHIP

Support the work. Expand what is possible.

Individuals, families, institutions and funders can make a one-time contribution or discuss recurring support. Contributions are separate from membership and preserve scientific independence.

One environment. Clear responsibilities.

microscopIA hosts the scientific environment and manages contracts, resources and institutional appointments.

Research groups

Appointed scientific leads develop focused programs and supervise approved work.

Observatories and initiatives

Steering committees connect groups and experts to review priorities, proposals, conflicts and progress.

Projects

Named principal investigators remain accountable for study protocols, permissions, methods and contributions.

Committee seats and delegated authority require formal appointment. microscopIA coordinates intake and appoints competent reviewers before execution. Membership does not confer authority to represent or contract for the organization.

Collaboration and governance →

From proposal to execution

Every new research project, case report, case series or innovation proposal requires written approval from the Observatory steering committee under microscopIA governance or appointed research group scientific lead. Admission or membership does not replace this approval.

  1. Submit the aim, methods, proposed team, data, resources and expected outputs to the responsible scientific authority.
  2. The scientific authority reviews and approves the proposal, documenting its scope and conditions.
  3. Once approved, the scientific reviewing authority notifies microscopIA to initiate execution of the approved project.
  4. microscopIA coordinates responsibilities, staff, budget, milestones and data/IP agreements. Activities begin with the required ethics, institutional and regulatory permissions in place.

microscopIA appoints competent reviewers before execution. Reviewers disclose conflicts and recuse themselves where appropriate. Membership does not confer contracting authority or permission to reuse contacts or data for external projects.
